Collectors and some dealers can easily and readily decide whether
a quarter of this date has been altered from any following date
(usually a ’58). When the Government altered the standard, in
1853, they decreased the weight from 412} grains to 385 grains,
making a difference of 274 grains on each dollar of subsidiary
money. To show the change, they put arrow-heads at side
of date and sun-burst on reverse; consequently a quarter with¬
out arrow heads of this date would weigh nearly 7 grains more
than a quarter of any date thereafter. In a balance scale a poor
quarter without arrows of this date would weigh more than a
new or uncirculated one of 1854 or following dates. Another
test: they are always struck over a ’52, the curl of the 2 show¬
ing below upper knob of the 3.
